Good reading

Below are a selection of noise and vibration control related papers - some authored by SS personnel and others that are just. that. good.

01

The Complex World of Sound

This was an article written by Dan Maguire for the Women in Transportation Society Newsletter. It describes some of the basics of our dislike of noise and the reduction of it.

02

The Impact of A-weighting Sound Pressure Level Measurements during the Evaluation of Noise Exposure

This paper - with primary author Rick St. Pierre - discusses the history and use/misuse of the A-weighting scale. I consider it a must read for anyone who uses the A-weighting setting on their SPL meter.

03

Survey of Excitation Signals for FFT Based Signal Analyzers

Whenever anyone asks why our transfer function models are so fast and so good, we send them a copy of this paper. Some things never get old.

04

A Control Systems Synthesis Methodology for the Design of Resource-limited Controllers

This is Dan Maguire's dissertation. One of his major professors described the first 25 pages as "required reading for every controls graduate student." You can decide for yourself!

05

Noise Regulation Validity

A measurement can be 100% accurate but still not valid. As an example, just place a thermometer on your heat vent to measure the temperature in your office. This paper considers the validity of noise regulations.

06

Mining for Silence - SAE Off Highway and Engineering Magazine

This article describes the application of active noise control to mining haul trucks.

07

The Active Sound Experience or... If active control is so good, why isn’t it already in your car?

This was an invited presentation given to the Auto Interiors technical conference. It discusses the value of active control in consumer automobiles.

08

Dynamic Sampling for the Low Cost Implementation of Adaptive Filters for Active Noise and Vibration Control

This technical paper present the concept of using varying sample rates for the active control of tonal disturbances resulting from rotating machinery. By moving into the "order domain," computational load can decrease and/or precision can increase.

09

Noise Quieting Directives and Active Control - When Poorly Drafted,Understood, or Executed Rules Hurt Both Hearing and Technology

This paper focuses its rage on the inappropriateness of A-weighting locomotive noise measurements. It was an invited presentation to the Dutch Acoustical Society.
