Active control systems

The Sound Solutions Principle and partners have decades of active control system design and implementation experience. We are not talking about MATLAB simulations and bench top demos (although we do that, too!). We are talking about real hardware being installed in real situations.

Active control can be noise or vibration, digital or analog, and non-contact or headphone-based. Control units have been embedded or tied to windows-based laptop interfaces. We have recently been exploring the use of IoT devices for active control - relying on C, assembly, and micropython for programming.

In addition to control system implementation, we can provide training, as well. Jump start your active effort by relying on those who have already walked the road.

In short - when it comes to active control - we have basically done it all. ...and we can do it for you.

Representative projects

Locomotive active noise quieting

Locomotives are filled with low frequency tonal noise. ...and they are loud. It is not unexpected to achieve noise reductions of 5dBA at an operator ear when applying active noise control to a locomotive cabin. SS has the ability to simulate the reduction from recorded sound signatures and to then install a system for verification.

Consumer Automotive/Truck ANC

Consumer automobiles are not known for their extreme noise issues. ...but the people who drive them have very high expectations. Consumer trucks have use characteristics that make an unpleasant sound experience problematic. In each of these cases, active noise control can make the difference between a good and poor customer experience.

Mining and ag vehicle noise quieting

Mining haul trucks, wheel loaders, and agricultural tractors are all perfect applications of active noise control. The power requirements of the vehicle's task mean that the operator is subjected to significant low frequency tonal noise. Other phenomenon such as rear window resonance and hydraulic pump noise can contribute to a harmful spectrum, as well.

Active vibration control

Active vibration control systems act to create virtual grounding points on a vehicle structure. At these point, the structure remains still with respect to the inertial reference frame. If the control points are well chosen, a significant improvement in ride quality can result. Panel radiation can also be addressed by either inertial or piezoelectric means.

Standalone system design

When someone decides that they need an active noise controller, the next question is what form it should take. An example of the possibilities that exist is this bolt-in haul truck ANC system. Power is the only thing that is required for this self-contained unit to provide excellent noise quieting.

Active system training

SS has provided active control training on three continents. This training can be individual presentations or series that address all aspects of measurement and control. In this way, your team can learn decades of control theory and practice in weeks or months.
